Where to Eat
in Norwich

Welcome to Norwich. The conference feeds you by day, but the evenings are yours — and this is a city with far better food than its size suggests, from a hundred-year-old chip shop to a Bib Gourmand in a village pub. Below are thirty-two places worth your time, grouped by how far you'll have to travel and ordered from cheapest to dearest.

Pro tip: read ratings sceptically

Cross-check ratings across platforms. Google ratings tend to run higher than other review sites for the same venue, so a 4.5 on Google is not the same as a 4.5 elsewhere.

The evidence is narrower than the claim, so treat the direction as reliable and the size as indicative. Mellinas & Sicilia (2024) compared ~46,000 reviews of Europe's most-visited museums and theme parks and confirm that venues tend to score higher on Google than on TripAdvisor — but their sample is attractions, not restaurants (Consumer Behavior in Tourism and Hospitality, 19(4), 646–655). For restaurants, the clearest measured figure is against a different competitor: Li & Hecht (2020) found ratings 0.7 stars higher on Google Maps than on Yelp, driven substantially by chains (Proc. ACM Hum.-Comput. Interact. 4, CSCW3). Neither study covers UK restaurants directly, so no exact number is claimed here.

How to read this list

  • £ — under about £20 a head for food
  • ££ — roughly £20–40 a head for food
  • £££ — £40 a head and up for food
  • Book ahead — turning up cold is a gamble

Prices are per person for two courses or the equivalent, drinks excluded, based on menus published by each venue. Travel times are estimates from the John Innes Centre (NR4 7UH) — check before you commit.
